- The Generic Adventure Game System (tm)
- Copyright 1985,1986 by Mark J. Welch

-
-
- The Generic Adventure Game System (TM) is being distributed as
- "Shareware" (also called "User-Supported Software"), which means
- that you do not have to pay for it before you use it. The disk,
- with all programs and text files, can be freely copied and shared.
- If you like the program, I ask that you make a contribution of $15.
- The donation is voluntary and should not be considered payment for
- software or services. By doing so, you encourage me (and other
- programmers) to distribute other software the same way, thus giving
- you a chance to "test-drive" all your software before paying for
- it.
-
- Before running this program, please read the following section
- very carefully, as it governs your rights and responsibilities
- with regard to the Generic Adventure Game System.
-
-
- USER'S RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
-
- Many shareware authors have been driven to distraction by people
- reselling our programs for profit. Many of us have considered
- ceasing to share our programs as a result, and some of us have
- done so.
-
-
- (continued)
-
- C-2
-
- (GAGS Distribution Rules - continued)
-
-
- One assumption that is often made is that shareware authors will
- not bother to pursue copyright violators. This is not so. Such
- people tend to violate the copyrights of many shareware authors at
- once, and we are starting to get smart and band together to pursue
- these infringers. When it comes to the attention that someone has
- listed the Generic Adventure Game System for sale in a catalog,
- offered it for sale at a show, or made a profit off it in any other
- fashion, I shall refer the matter immediately to my attorney.
-
- The above is not intended to frighten legitimate users of the
- Generic Adventure Game System. The following will tell you exactly
- what you can and cannot do with the program.
-
- The Generic Adventure Game System (GAGS) is a copyrighted work of
- Mark J. Welch and is not in the public domain. The author grants
- permission to users of this program to make as many copies of the
- program and its documentation as they wish and to give those
- copies to others. GAGS may also be uploaded to and downloaded from
- free, public Bulletin Board Systems. GAGS may be uploaded to and
- downloaded from commercial systems such as CompuServe, the Source,
- and BIX so long as the only charge paid by the subscriber is for
- on-line time and there is no charge for the program. Those
- copying, sharing, and/or electronically transmitting the program
- are required not to delete or modify the copyright notice and
- restrictive notices from the program or documentation; anyone
- doing so will be regarded in a proper case as a contributory
- copyright violator.
-
- The Generic Adventure Game System's documentation may not be
- modified by users. The program may not be separated from the
- documentation when distributed.
-
- No one may charge any fee, price, or contribution for GAGS or for
- the media on which it is stored, nor may GAGS be distributed as a
- promotion for any commercial venture or as an inducement for the
- user to pay for any program, product or service.
-
- Special terms apply to educational institutions, clubs, and not-
- for-profit organizations, which may sell the program to members
- and students at a price not to exceed $7. No organization seeking
- to sell GAGS for profit or in conjunction with a profit-making
- enterprise may sell GAGS. No organzation which has been not
- granted not-for-profit status by the IRS may sell GAGS. Such
- organizations may not distribute GAGS unless they have written
- permission from the author. My silence does NOT constitute consent
- and if I do not respond to your letter, please write me again.

- OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR OF FITNESS
- FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE GENERIC ADVENTURE GAME SYSTEM (GAGS)
- IS AVAILABLE AS IS. IN NO EVENT WILL THE AUTHOR BE LIABLE FOR
- DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR INCIDENTAL AND
- CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, EVEN IF THE AUTHOR HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE
- POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
-
- The author would like to know of any problems that users have with
- the program but makes no promises or guarantee that any such

- service sold) by a for-profit organization without written
- permission.
-

- | OTHER SHAREWARE |
- |_______________________|
-
- While both public-domain and commercial software have existed
- since the first computers were invented, "Shareware" was a concept
- that seemed to appear with the IBM PC. Releasing fine programs
- into the public domain fails to provide software authors with any
- clear incentive to repeat their efforts. However, marketing
- software commercially requires a phenomenal effort. Shareware is
- an acceptable compromise: computer users pay for software they
- find useful, after "test driving" it for a while.
- A warning: most "Shareware" authors are unwilling to provide
- telephone support to "unregistered" users.
- DO NOT ask me for copies of these programs: I am only
- responsible for GAGS, which will probably be too much all by
- itself.
- Many of the programs are available in the "libraries" of IBM PC
- users' groups, including the Boston Computer Society's IBM PC sub-
- group and the San Francisco PC Users' Group. There are, of course,
- benefits to membership in users' groups, and I encourage everyone
- to join their local users' group or even a not-so-local users'
- group.
- If you know of other "shareware" software that deserves to be
- mentioned here, let me know about it and I'll try to include the
- details on future disks I distribute. Many computer magazines also
- make a special effort to let their readers know about new public-
- domain and shareware programs, and electronic services like
- CompuServe, the Source, and the BYTE Information Exchange (BIX)
- provide software-download sections where Shareware programs can be
- posted. Naturally, many computer bulletin-board systems also
- provide large libraries of public-domain and Shareware software.
- Each of the following product and company names are the
- trademarks of the authors and/or companies marketing the programs.
- ["Freeware" is a trademark of the Headlands Press. "Shareware"
- and "User-Supported Software" are not trademarks.]
-
- ---------------------
-
- PC-Talk [IBM/Microsoft BASIC, compiled BASIC]
- The first -- and most famous -- program distributed in this
- manner was PC-Talk, whose author, Andrew Fluegelman, originated
- the "Freeware" concept and registered "Freeware" as a trademark.
- PC-Talk is an excellent telecommunications program for the IBM
- PC, and has been translated for a number of semi-compatibles.
- (PC-Talk is available for $35 from the Headlands Press, Box 862,
- Tiburon, CA 94920, 415-435-9775.)
-

-
- D-2
-
- (More Shareware - continued)
-
-
- PC-File
- PC-Graph
- PC-Dial
- PC-File (a database/file program), PC-Graph (graphics), and
- PC-DIal (telecommunications) are three programs written by Jim
- Button, the pseudonym of a former IBM employee. ($45 from
- Buttonware, Box 5786, Bellevue, WA 98006, 206-746-4296 or 800-
- JBUTTON.)
-
- ---------------------
-
- PC-Write [Microsoft Pascal]
- This is my word processor of choice. Bob Wallace of Quicksoft
- has outdone every other "shareware" effort, including
- sophisticated capabilities and lightning-speed in a shareware
- word processor which unquestionably is superior to 90% of the
- commercially-available word processors for the IBM PC. Included
- on the disk is an excellent 141-page manual, which can also be
- purchased from Quicksoft. The source code is also available to
- registered users. (Disk is $10, registration is $75, from
- Quicksoft, 219 First N #224, Seattle, WA 98109, 206-282-0452.)
-
- ---------------------
-
- PC-Deskmates
- Alternative Decision Software has done a very good job of
- cloning SideKick, Spotlight, and the other memory-resident
- utility programs tagged as "Convenience Software." PC-Deskmates
- is not as good as Sidekick or Spotlight, but the price can't be
- beat. ($10 for disk, $25 registration, from Alternative Decision
- Software, Box 307, Lancaster, NY 14086.)
-
- ---------------------
-
- PC-Windows [Microsoft/8088 Assembly Language]
- Cannon/Mill Software hasn't done as well as Alternative
- Decision software, but offers another "Sidekick" clone.
- Cannon/Mill also offers the assembly-language source code for PC-
- Window for just $30 (on disk), so you can use it as the
- foundation of your very own pop-up program. ($10 disk, $30 disk
- with source code, from Cannon/Mill Software, Box 10047, Columbia,
- MO 65205.) The same folks offer PC-Keys, a keyboard-
- enhancement program again $10 or $30 for source code.
-
- ---------------
-
- The Generic Adventure Game System [Turbo Pascal]
- This adventure game authoring system was written by Mark J.
- Welch. The disk is available for $10 from the author;
- registration is $15; the Turbo Pascal source code is available to
- registered users for $25. (Mark Welch, P.O. Box 2409, San
- Francisco, CA 94126, 415-845-2430 voice).
